Veneers have been popular since the 90’s yet with the rise of social media, they’re now available for the everyday person. It’s safe to say most cosmetic treatments have grown in popularity since Instagram, however veneers have gone to a whole new level. As a result, influencers have normalised cosmetic enhancements for a whole new generation of consumers.
Veneers not only improve the appearance of your teeth, but they also give a brighter and more even smile. They are used to treat broken or chipped teeth and severe discoloration that can’t be fixed with whitening. They can also fix gaps between teeth, uneven teeth, or teeth that are irregularly shaped.
This procedure usually requires three trips to the dentist. The first one is for a consultation and then two further appointments to manufacture and apply the veneers. One tooth or multiple teeth can undergo the process at the same time. The veneers cover only the front surface of the tooth and will mimic the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth. They can be used on one or more teeth depending on the look you want to achieve and the advice from your dentist.
Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers generally resist stains better than resin ones. They also better mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. However, composite have several advantages over porcelain, namely cost. On average, porcelain ones are twice as expensive as composites.
On the day of the procedure, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth. This will create a space for the veneer to adhere to whilst not impeding your bite. After this, a new teeth mould is created and sent to a lab for the veneer creation.
Only minor adjustments can be made after the veneer is fitted Your dentist will want to check and polish the veneers a week or so after just to make sure you are happy with the result.
